Born into a poor family, Surya grows up with few luxuries. Poor health keeps him away from school often and that is when his elder brother, Chandrakant, introduces him to carrom. Winning the Junior Carrom Championship at 12 is not enough to keep Surya's fire for the sport burning through adolescence. Hopes for a job in Dubai replace the passion for carrom as Surya grows into a young man. Duped by a bogus overseas employment agency, Surya loses all his hard earned money he had saved for going to Dubai. Surya is forced to cross paths with Jaleel.
Since the 70's when the settlements in the ghetto began, Jaleel had acquired a strong hold in the area. He had his hands in every illicit activity since then. Feeding on the weaknesses of people, Jaleel was the self-proclaimed king of Malwani. Reintroduced to carrom by his childhood friend Zaid, this time to the hustling scene, Surya starts playing again. Being gypped of his hand earned money by the same man who had caused misery for many families; Surya decides to take on Jaleel on his turf. His patience and cool attitude are Surya's biggest strengths. But life has its own ways of testing it.

Box office

The film fared very poorly at the Indian box office. Though it was given only a one week theatrical run, it garnered critical acclaim. However, being the first film in history to premiere the same day on youtube, the film garnered over 800,000 views in the first 2 weeks. Estimated profits from this are said to be over USD 1mn.

Mismatched travellers are stranded overnight at a lonely rural railway station. They soon learn of local superstition about a phantom train which is said to travel these parts at dead of night, carrying ghosts from a long-ago train wreck in the area. The travelers eventually get to the bottom of the things that go bump in the night. In between the scary bits, comedian Arthur Askey plays the gags with his Vaudeville style humor.

Differences from play

The film splits the lead character (Teddy Deakin) in the play to accommodate the comedy partnership of Askey & Murdoch.
In the play the villains are gun runners. This was changed to Fifth Columnists in the film as it was made during the war
The equivalent character in the play to Julia Price in the film is in fact the leader of the gun runners
A secret passage is used in the play that is not evident in the film
The character of Gander/Deakin starts the play as a complete buffoon in the Bertie Wooster mould

Aashayein...Movie Review

Aashayein
Starring: John Abraham, Sonal Sehgal,

Written & Directed by Nagesh Kukunoor

Rating: *** ½

This is a film about coping with dying. But that’s not what makes it such a special experience. It’s the writer- director’s profound understanding of human nature that furnishes the simple story with a lucidity and coherence even when the protagonist’s mind is so numbed by physical pain he can barely think straight.

Aashayein is structured as a journey from a bright delusory light into a place where the radiance comes from a consciousness of why mortality is not to be feared.

In John Abraham’s eyes are mapped the entire history of the human heart, its follies and foibles as it struggles to make coherest the indecipherable logistics that define our journey across that bridge which everyone crosses from this world to the next.

As that very fine actress Prateeksha Lonkar (a Kukunoor favourite) says, “The only difference between the healthy and the ill is that the former don’t know when they are dying and the latter do.”

Between that state of blissful oblivion where we all think life is forever (and a day) and that one moment when our delusions come crashing down there resides some very fine cinema. Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anand where Rajesh Khanna smiled his way though that wobbly bridge taking us to the next world, is an interesting reference point in Aashayein.

I also thought of the actress Supriya Choudhary shouting into the dispassionate mists in the mountains, “I want to live.”The echoes reverberate all the way to Kukunoor’s heartwarming funny and elegiac exposition on the truth that lies on the other side of that illusory mountain we call life. Kukunoor pays a homage to life per se, and life as we know in the movies about death.

Even in the most poignant places in the art Kukunoor ferrets out some humour. When John’s lovely girlfriend (Sonal Sehgal) hunts him down in his exilic place of the dying John quips, “So you are not going to behave like one of those heroines in films who dumps the dying hero?”

The fantasy element creeps into the hospice (yes, that’s the spotless space that the story inhabits unostentatiously) with the least amount of fuss. There’s a little boy (the bright and expressive Ashwin Chaitale) who weaves mystical tales borrowed from the comicbooks for the desperate and the dying. Here Kukunoor brings in an element of rakish adventure borrowed from the edgy hijinks of Indian Jones.

Who says money can’t buy love? John uses bundles of cash to bring a smile into these doomed lives. When he doubles up with pain in womb-like postures of helplessness we feel his pain.

John in Harrison Ford’s hat and whip cuts a starry figure. He has never been more fetchingly photographed. John’s smile reaches his eyes, makes its way to his heart and then to ours. This film opens new doors in John’s histrionic hospice. It’s a performance that heals and nurtures.

John’s finest moments are reserved for a hot-tempered sharp-tongued 17-year old girl on a wheelchair, played with intuitive warmth by Anaitha Nayar. He guides the relationship between these two unlikely comrades of unwellness with brilliant restrain and candour. She wants him to make love.He does with his eyes using his unshed tears as lyrical lubricant.

Here is a performance that defines the character through immense measures of unspoken anguish. Rajesh Khanna in Anand? Nope. John pitches his performance at a more wry and cynical world where true feelings are often smothered in worldly sprints across a wounded civilization.

This is unarguably Kukunoor’s most sensitive and moving work since Iqbal. We often find little sobs pounding at the base of our stomachs. Not all the characters or situations are fully formed and fructified.

But even the partly-realized truths in Aashayein convey more common sense and uncommon affection for life than the “entertainers” of today’s cinema where laughter is generated through cracks in places very far removed from the heart.

This one takes us straight to the heart.

Help....Movie Review

HelpStarring: Bobby Deol, Mugdha Godse, Shreyas Talpade, Sophie Handa, Jyoti Dogra and Salim Fatehi

Director: Rajeev Manoj Virani

Rating: **1/2

Rajeev Manoj Virani's Help is a well made horror film that succeeds in giving you the requisite chills and thrills expected out of a good horror film but the problem lies with the unoriginality of the plot that seems heavily inspired from Thai film Alone.

Vic (Bobby Deol) is a filmmaker in a relationship with Pia (Mugdha). There relationship is going through turmoil because of rumours linking Vic with his actress Sussane (Linda Arsenio).

The couple has to immediately fly to Mauritius, after they get a call about Pia's dad (Salim Fatehi) having a heart attack. But after Pia comes back to her ancestral house strange things start happening with her. She starts seeing her dead twin sister Dia who had died when she was five.

After it is known that Pia is pregnant the spirit of her twin sister completely possesses her body even making her a murderer of her near and dear ones. A baffled Vic then decides to take the help of a parapsychologist Aditya (Shreyas Talpade) to solve the mystery and save Mugdha. But as they dig deeper, Aditya and Vic are shocked by the revelations behind the strange happenings!

Agreed it is an inspired film but full marks to debutante Rajiv Manoj Virani for keeping his narrative focused on the main plot and making a technically superb film. It doesn't look like his first attempt at all.

For those who haven't seen the original, Help has enough genuinely spooky moments to keep you on the edge of your seats. Just like Bhoot, this film succeeds in scaring you in broad day light sequences too.

All the spooky sequences have been extremely well shot be it sequences when the spirit of the little girl crawls on the ceiling scaring the daylights out of Mugdha or the climax after Shreyas comes back to Bobby and Mugdha.

The final revelation is least expected and a true shocker in every sense of the word.

Mugdha enacts her difficult role fairly well. Bobby Deol is earnest and does well in his part. Shreyas Talpade is very impressive, especially in the climax sequence. Salim Fatehi is good and so is Sophie Handa who plays Mugdha's best friend. Jyoti Dogra playing Mugdha's mom is terrific and gives you the chills whenever she is on screen.

Camerawork by Dhimant Vyas is very good especially for the night sequences. Ashu's music is passable.

Help is a fairly engrossing watch for those who like horror films. Sure it is an inspired film but which film isn't nowadays? This technically well shot film is paisa vasool where chills and thrills are concerned.

Amar Akbar Anthony (Devnagari: अमर अकबर एन्थोनी) is a 1977  Bollywood  film about three brothers separated during their childhood who grew up in three different homes, adopting three different religions. It was the biggest blockbuster of 1977[1]  and has also won several Filmfare  awards.[2]

The film was directed by Manmohan Desai and starred three actors, of them included Amitabh Bachchan (as Anthony Gonsalves), Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor. Each of the three heroes had an affiliation with a heroine, which included Parveen Babi, Shabana Azmi and Neetu Singh. Nirupa Roy, Pran and Jeevan played supporting roles. The music was written by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Kishore Kumar sang for Amitabh Bachchan, and Mohammed Rafi sang for Rishi Kapoor. The soundtrack was one of Mukesh's last soundtracks with Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Anand Bakshi was the lyricist.

The film was later remade in two times: in Telugu as Ram Robert Rahim (1980)[3] and in Malayalam as John, Jaffar, Janardhan.

Synopsis

Kishanlal (Pran), a chauffeur, takes the blame for a fatal hit-and-run accident committed by his mob boss employer, Robert (Jeevan), on the assurance that his family's income will be tripled and their welfare looked after. He returns from prison to find his wife Bharati (Nirupa Roy) suffering from tuberculosis and his three sons starving. Seeking help from Robert for the sake of his family, he is ridiculed, humiliated and repudiated, until he turns on Robert and tries to kill him. Making his escape, Kishanlal inadvertently takes a car containing a shipment of gold bullion. Robert's goons give chase.

Kishanlal goes home to rescue his family - only to find his wife's suicide note. Unbeknownst to him she fails, and is struck blind. He leaves his sons in a public park (at the foot of a statue of Ghandi) while he draws off the pursuing goons. In the car chase that follows he crashes, is thrown clear of the wreck, and discovers the gold. But by the time he returns to the park with his riches, his three children have vanished. They have been adopted by a Hindu policeman (Amar), a Muslim tailor (Akbar), and a Catholic priest (Anthony). In revenge, Kishanlal kidnaps Robert's daughter Jenny and raises her as his niece, meanwhile using the gold to destroy Robert and set himself up as mob boss.

Amar (Vinod Khanna) becomes a policeman like his adoptive Hindu father; the Muslim-raised brother Akbar (Rishi Kapoor) becomes a singer; the middle brother, Anthony (Amitabh Bachchan), is raised by a Catholic priest and becomes a likable, socially-conscious scamp who runs a quasi-legal bar and brewery and makes God his 'partner' by donating half his income to charity. The three meet when they donate blood for an accident victim, unaware that they are related - or that the recipient is actually their biological mother Bharati.

Their lives become entangled in an incredible web of unlikely coincidences and furious action sequences, interspersed with song, when Amar's adopted father is seriously wounded and Anthony's adoptive father, the priest, is murdered. In their pursuit of justice their paths cross until, combining efforts, they discover both the culprit and their mutual heritage.

In addition to the ongoing feud between Robert and Kishanlal, each son meets and courts - with greater or lesser difficulty - their love interests. When the grieving mother regains her sight, one by one the family is re-united until Robert, who caused their suffering, is imprisoned and the family united.

Synopsis
Shyam (Sunil Shetty) has come to Mumbai seeking a job in his late father's bank. Apparently his father died in a fire that broke out in the bank and he claims that the bank owes him the job. Soon he discovers that he is not the only one after this job. A young woman, Anuradha Panniker, is also in the running, her father also died in that fire. Shyam claims he should get the job as his father died before Anuradha's father so his father is several minutes "senior" to Anuradha's father.

After a bad day at the bank, Shyam is on his way to find lodging when he bumps into Raju (Akshay Kumar), a slacker and con-man, Shyam believes that Raju tried to steal his wallet and the men have an argument.

Later that evening, Shyam reaches "Star Garage" owned by Baburao Ganpatrao Apte (Paresh Rawal), a kind-hearted (and equally near-sighted) man who is eccentric and an alcoholic. He agrees to take him in as a paying boarder, although he warns Shyam that he will have to share the place with another boarder. Unfortunately for Shyam the other guy is Raju, who has not paid a single penny of rent in the last 2 years to Baburao. The two men come to blows again the minute they see each other. Poor Baburao is stuck in the middle.

Following day Shyam receives a visit from Anuradha, who is trying to make him sign a waiver allowing her to take the job. He refuses, but Raju manages to trick him into signing it anyway. When Shyam discovers what has happens, he threatens to sue both the bank manager and Anuradha. Panicked, the manager convinces her to try and woo Shyam, to no avail. Finally, she offer to give up the job for 50,000 rupees. Needless to say, he doesn't have the 50,000, but he discovers that she's in worse financial shape than him. Following the death of her father, she has been forced to take care of her mentally-disturbed mother, and hasn't paid her rent in two years. She offers the position to Shyam without conditions, but he refuses.

Eventually, Shyam, Raju and Babu bond over a night of drinking, where they all realize they're in the same boat. The next morning, they receive a call for a Mr. Devi Prasad—which is nothing new, because Babu is constantly getting calls for Devi Prasad. This time, however, it's deadly serious. The caller is Kabira, a criminal, who has kidnapped Devi Prasad's granddaughter and is holding her for ransom. Raju comes up with the idea of contacting the real Devi Prasad, posing as Kabira and demanding double the ransom—after which, they pay Kabira the original amount and pocket the other half. As could be expected, very little goes according to plan.

Will Kishan let Karan's daughter Suman (Bhagyashree) stay at his house? Kishan cannot turn down his old friend's request and Suman comes to live with Kishan's family.

At first country girl Suman is ill at ease in the huge mansion. She is befriended by Kishan's son Prem (Salman Khan), who assures her that he has no romantic interest in her and that a boy and a girl can be platonic friends. The pair share outings and confidences and all seems to be going well.

Then Prem takes Suman to a party put on by some of his rich friends. They humiliate Suman and accuse her of scheming to marry Prem. Suman leaves in tears and distances herself from Prem. At that point, Prem suddenly realizes that he has fallen in love with her. With aid of his mother (who likes the unassuming Suman) and his comic friend Manohar, Prem sets out to win Suman's heart.

He succeeds, but their romance is balked by Prem's father Kishan, who does not want his son to marry a poor nobody. He prepares to send Suman home in disgrace. At this unpropitious moment, Karan returns from overseas. Kishan accuses him of plotting to match Prem and Suman. Karan and Kishan quarrel; Karan and Suman then return to their village.
